Why I Started BLP: Wholesome Stories That Bring Families Together

Bright Little Pages began with something close to home: my son's love of reading, writing, and coloring. Watching what interested him helped shape the kind of books I wanted to create—stories families could enjoy together, with opportunities to keep learning and creating after the last page.

What inspired me to start writing these books?

My son. He loves to read, he loves to write, and he loves to color. When I paid attention to what lit him up, I started to see what I wanted to put in front of him, and in front of other children: stories that are warm and enjoyable, and that leave room for more. More talking. More creating. More time together.

I'm also a Christian school educator, so I think a lot about how children learn and what makes a book worth reading again and again. As a mother and an educator, I value books that open the door to conversations, creativity, and learning. That is what I set out to write.

What does “wholesome” mean to me?

To me, wholesome is not about what a book leaves out. It is about what a book invites in.

It means a story you can hand to a child and feel comfortable bringing into your home. It means characters who spend time with their families. It means everyday experiences that children recognize, like the changing seasons or cooking something together in the kitchen. And it means books that give you something to talk about when you close the cover.

How can a story continue beyond the page?

A story does not have to end on the last page. A few simple ways to keep it going:

  • Make the recipe. The Brighton's seasonal books include recipes, so you can step into the kitchen and make something together after you read.
  • Talk about the characters. Ask what a character was feeling, or what your child would have done in the same moment.
  • Enjoy a printable. I offer free printable resources that families and educators can use alongside reading, including coloring sheets.

Not every book has every extra, and you are welcome to use as much or as little as fits your day.

How can families use these books at home or in their homeschool day?

However they fit. Read a story at bedtime. Pull one out on a rainy afternoon. Add a book to your homeschool morning, or keep a printable on hand for quiet time. These books are flexible additions to your day. They are not a complete curriculum, and they are not meant to be. They are simply good stories with some room to grow.

What do I hope Bright Little Pages will accomplish?

Bright Little Pages is an author-owned, independent publishing company. I write the books, and I personally handle the business. That means when you write to me, you are writing to the person who made the books.

My vision is to get wholesome books into more children's hands, through families, shops, schools, libraries, and community partnerships. If you would like to see how we work with schools and educators or with literacy partners, I would love to hear from you.
